1.1 Background of the Study
Environmental activism plays a crucial role in raising awareness about environmental degradation, promoting conservation efforts, and advocating for sustainable practices. In Zuru Local Government Area, Kebbi State, environmental challenges such as deforestation, land degradation, and water pollution have had significant impacts on the region’s natural resources and livelihoods. Photography has become a key tool in the efforts of environmental activists, serving as a medium for documenting environmental destruction and advocating for change. By capturing compelling images of the environment, photography communicates the urgency of ecological preservation and helps in fostering a sense of responsibility among the public. This study explores how photography contributes to environmental activism in Zuru, assessing its role in both documenting environmental issues and mobilizing the community for action.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Zuru, like many rural areas in Nigeria, faces several environmental challenges that have gone largely unaddressed due to insufficient awareness and public engagement. While environmental organizations and activists work tirelessly to highlight these issues, they often lack the resources to communicate effectively with a broader audience. Photography offers an impactful way to capture and communicate the state of the environment, yet its role in environmental activism in Zuru has not been adequately explored. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the ways in which photography aids in environmental advocacy, raising public awareness, and influencing policy and behavior regarding environmental conservation in Zuru.
